Limited areas of Colombo and other parts of the Western Province will experience 5G network for the first time from December this year, prior to it being introduced to the entire country in stages, the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRC) stated.
Director General of TRC, Oshada Senanayake told Times Online that once introduced, the 5G network will enable high speed data transactions with many facilities, from traffic lights to hospitals, linked under the network.
Mr Senanayake stated the TRC wants service providers to implement 5G in the country as soon as possible and will give them targets to be met.
Currently, four companies in the world are involved in selling 5G systems for carriers. They are Huwawei, ZTE, Nokia and Ericsson. The TRC DG said that all vendors would be evaluated and provided guidelines on stringent security mechanisms that needs to be in place in ensuring security concerns.
