The Police Kennels Division has successfully trained 70 sniffer dogs to detect narcotics such as cocaine and heroin.
Sixty dogs were imported and given training, Kennels Division Director General Lal Seneviratne said.
Mr. Seneviratne added that special kennels divisions have been established at the Bandaranaike International Airport and the Customs Department in order to prevent drug trafficking.
Further, he said that the Galle Kennels Division has been deploying sniffer dogs to the Mattala Airport and the Galle and Hambantota harbours.
Measures are being taken to train these dogs to detect different narcotics, the Kennels Division Director noted.
At present, 222 dogs are currently being trained at the Kennels Division.
