All petitions that have been filed on the 19 Amendment at the Supreme Court will be taken up for hearing today. Over 15 petitions have already been filed by multiple parties for and against the 19 Amendment which has already been presented to Parliament. The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday filed a petition against the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in the Supreme Court. The JHU, in its petition, argued that the 19 Amendment warranted a referendum. Meanwhile, the JVP too filed a petition yesterday stating the 19 Amendment did not require a referendum. Western Province Provincial Councillor and JHU National Organiser Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe who filed the petition on behalf of the JHU said that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution has proposed devolution of powers among the Heads of State and Government, was vague and the amendment perse violates the election manifesto of President Maithripala Sirisena.
