A total of 769.464 kilograms of cocaine which were seized in the recent past were destroyed at the DNS Warehouse complex at Gonawala amidst the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena in Kelaniya today (Apr 01).
These huge hauls of cocaine were destroyed under the supervision of the Colombo Magistrate and the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate by converting it into a liquid before being transported to a Cement factory in Puttalam belonging to Incee Ecocycle Ltd.
The liquid will be transported under police protection in four tanks belonging to Incee Ecocycle and would be vaporised at the Cement Factory under temperatures between 1800-2000 degrees Celsius, Police Spokesman S.P. Ruwan Gunasekara said.
He also noted that Incee Ecocyle was entrusted with the duty of carrying out this project since it has been registered and certified under the Central Enviornment Authority (CEA). Further, he added that Incee Ecocycle was the only local company which has the technology to vaporise liquid narcotics at an extremely high temperature.
Meanwhile, the advice of the Attorney General has also been obtained in order to vaporise the liquid cocaine without causing harm to the environment, the police spokesman stressed.
The last similar occasion was recorded in July 15, 2018 during which 911 kilos of cocaine were destroyed in the public.
