A committee to inquire into issues in Kitulgala white water rafting

President’s Secretary Mr. Saman Ekanayake advised to appoint a committee to find out the issues that have given rise with regard to white water rafting.

The world-famous sport centered around Kitulgala area has run into issues owing to the Broadland Hydroelectric Project.

A discussion was held at the President’s Secretariat yesterday (23) afternoon.   

The President’s Secretary also advised that this committee, which will be assigned by the officials of the Ministry of Tourism and the line agencies, to carry out a field investigation on the issues presented in respect to it and hand over a report within two weeks.

White water rafting, which is operated in the vicinity of Kitulgala, has charmed a lot of local and foreign tourists over the years.  

In view of the Broadland Hydroelectricity project, there have been issues on the functioning of Kitulgala water rafting, the relevant service providers emphasized. Their standards of living have also been drastically influenced and they seek to work for the safety of this sport, which has a great capability to earn foreign exchange for the country.

Broadland Hydropower Project Director who joined in this discussion highlighted that mandatory measures have been taken to cooperate with Kitulgala water rafting service provider community adhering to the present technical layouts. Even so, the President's Secretary took note of the practical roadblocks pointed out by the relevant service providers and instructed the officials to deliver quick fixes in due course.

 

Member of Parliament Ms. Rajika Wickramasinghe and Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs K. Mahesan, Secretary of the Ministry of Irrigation U.D.C. Messrs. Jayalal and the officials representing the Ministry of Tourism, Ceylon Electricity Board, Central Environment Authority and other line agencies participated in this discussion.
