A cabinet paper is to be submitted on enrolling students who obtain top marks from Advanced Level examination but fail to enter state universities due to z-scores to the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU).
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday instructed Education Minister G.L.Peiris to prepare the cabinet paper after the Education Minister highlighted the need to find suitable higher education opportunities for top scorers who do not get into the state university system.
Vice Chancellor of the Kotelawala Defence University Maj.Gen. Milinda Peiris stated that there is a possibility to absorb more students if state funds are allocated to improve infrastructure facilities.
The decision was made at a meeting held between the Prime Minister and officials of the University Grants Commission and university Vice Chancellors at the Temple Trees yesterday.
Premier Rajapaksa in a statement said he instructed officials to increase funding to improve infrastructure to accommodate and increase facilities for the extra 10, 588 students entering the state university system.
