Main political parties and trade unions are all set for the May day celebrations tomorrow.
They came out with mix plans as the international workers day coincided with the vesak poya day.
Some political parties and unions have curtailed the celebrations while others were going ahead with the celebrations, with the opposition parties use the opportunity to expose the government shortcomings and allegations of corruption.
According to the Deputy Labor Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe the party had decided to hold two events at Northern Province in Jaffna and Vavuniya, while having Badulla and Nuwara eliya district rallies as one in Nuwara eliya.
He explained that rest of the districts would have a mayday event at each district, accordingly Colombo district event would be held at Maharagama while the Gampaha district would be held at Kadawatha.
Main opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya views the upcoming May Day as an event to expose the corruption and shortcomings of the government.The National organizer of the party Thissa Attanayake explained that the people have turned towards disliking the government as they have seen shortcomings and corrupt acts of the government.
Harping on the corruption allegations leveled at the government and false promises given, SJB had taken the theme “Pacha Madiwata Horu” (roughs in addition to lies) for their rally at the P, D Sirisena Ground on the first of May. Mr Attanayake added only the rally would be held taking the poya day into account, therefore the rally would commence at 1.00 pm.
The United National party had decided to felicitate the 250 workers of the Jathika Sewaka sangamaya (JSS). The event would be held at the JSS headquarters on May 01, 2026. The party also would provide a buriani almsgiving (dana) with the sponsorship of the Buhari hotel on April 30.

SLFP too are ready to have their mayday event at the Campbell Park despite party disputes.
Meanwhile the Frontline socialist party is preparing to hold their May Day celebrations under theme “A working people’s power against a government which dances for the tune of imperialist savagery” at Hyde Park.
Secretary of the May Day Committee of the Samajwadi Janatha Peramuna (socialist alliance), Lal Steevan, said that the Communist party, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Democratic Left Front and Mahajana Party would celebrate the May day at Communist party head office.
