Another group of 18 Sri Lankan refugees including seven children from North reached Dhanushkodi via fishing boats, Rameshwaram early hours today, Indian police authorities confirmed.
The families are from Mannar and Jaffna districts. Currently, they are detained at the police station for formal inquiries and thereafter will be sheltered in Mandapam Special Camp setupped for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.
As the prevailing economic crisis hit Sri Lankans with shortage for essential items and fuel coupled with skyrocketing cost of living forced many families to leave the country for India to ensure their survival.
So far 60 persons reached Tamil Nadu via fishing boats as refugees and all of them are currently sheltered at temporary shelter camps in Rameswaram. (Pix by N. Lohathayalan)
