The Court of Appeal has postponed its decision on former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella’s petition to overturn the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court's order keeping him in custody until the end of his trial for allegedly importing substandard medicine.
Originally set for today (04), the ruling will now be issued on October 3, 2024. The Appeals Court, led by President Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and Justice Shashi Mahendran, will decide whether to allow the petition to proceed.
Mr. Rambukwella was arrested on February 2 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the alleged importation of substandard IVIG vials.
This followed demands from civil society and health sector unions for his arrest.
In October 2023, the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) reported that forged documents were used to clear a batch of vials containing human immunoglobulin, which failed quality tests.
