Two suspects who were transporting 45.3 kilograms of heroin in a van have been taken into custody by the Panadura Central Anti Vice Squad in Horana this morning.
The suspects are a serving soldier and a deserter from the army, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
The van which the heroin was being transported bore an army number plate while the arrested soldier was in the driver's seat in a military uniform, he added. The second suspect, an army deserter, was also arrested while inside the van.
Investigations have revealed that the van had entered the Southern Expressway from Imaduwa and exited from Galanigama before being intercepted.
The arrested suspects and the drugs are to be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB). The Panadura Central Anti Vice Squad and the PNB are jointly investigating the incident.
