The government has instructed both the police and the Department of Immigration and Emigration to be vigilant regarding tourists who arrive in the country on 30-day visit visas after an increase in complaints of illegal activity by foreigners who arrive on the short-term visa.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath told Timesonline that complaints relating to foreigners illegally working or running businesses, being engaged in various scams, banking/credit card fraud and money laundering were among the most frequent complaints.
The minister stated that, given the increase in complaints, both the police and immigration authorities have been instructed to be extra vigilant and "take immediate action" regarding complaints of illegal activity by tourists on short-term visas. He said the instructions have been issued also with the aim of preparing for the upcoming tourist season. He added that foreign diplomatic missions had conveyed to Sri Lankan authorities that they be informed immediately if any of their nationals are arrested regarding any illegal activity and that they would do all they can to assist Sri Lankan authorities in such cases.
