The General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera was granted bail by Colombo High Court today following an earlier directive issued by the Court of Appeal on a bail application.
When the case was taken up today, the High Court Judge Aditya Patabendige issued the order to the monk who was handed in four years of Rigours Imprisonment for contempt of court charges.
On March 28, Colombo High Court sentenced the Buddhist monk for having made derogatory statements to bring about disunity among communities and was sentenced for four years of imprisonment.
Earlier, a bail application was filed by Colombo High Court and it was dismissed by Judge Aditya Patabendige. However, a revision petition was filed in Court of Appeal seeking his bail. The Court of Appeal last week granted bail under the conditions of cash bail worth Rs 50,000 and two suriesties of Rs 500,000.
Earlier, the Mahanyake's of the Four Chapters in the country have jointly signed letter calling the President to pardon Ven Galagoda Aththe Ganasara Thera possibly before Weask from his term of the prison sentence of four years.
In a four paragraph letter the Venerable Thera's point out that Venerable Ganasara Thera headed the Presidents Committee for a "One Rule of Law and one Country " and had given the guidelines for its fulfillment.
