The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) is on a spree of raids to nab merchants selling eggs exceeding price controls.
A senior official of the Authority said that they have raided and found over 250 merchants who sold eggs above the maximum retail prices of Rs .
Legal action has been initiated against them.
In one such case the Avissawella Magistrate courts today imposed a fine of Rs 1,020,000 on a super market at Hanwella which belonged to a supermarket chain.
In another incident reported from Dematagoda area a businessman who sold a pack of 10 eggs was fined Rs 100,000 by Colombo Magistrate courts.
An officer of the authority said that according to the Consumer Affairs Authority Act they are able to fine Rs 100,000 to 500,000 from retailers while being able to fine Rs 500,000 to five million from private companies.
