Police today launched the CCTV based traffic violation detection system, but has faced opposition from the private bus sector.
The system was launched by Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.
Under the system footage from 181 CCTV cameras will be used to detect traffic violations and impose fines.
However Private Bus Ownets Association President Gemunu Wijeratne said they were opposed to the system.
But a Senior Police officer said the private bus drivers were the main offenders and they would not postpone the implementation of the system.
He said they have received a large number of complaints from other motorists against private bus drivers.
He said they use advantage of the size of the vehicle and cut across into other lanes.
He said part of the fresh operation is to take action against private bus drivers who are ignoring traffic laws.
