The Government is considering abolishing the Office of the Chief of the Defence Staff (OCDS) when the term of office of its incumbent General Shavendra Silva ends tomorrow, December 31,2024.
The Sunday Times learns the Government is discussing repealing the Chief of Defence Staff Act No. 35 of 2009 which was established to assist in the coordination of joint armed force's operations.
General Sarath Fonseka served as the first CDS while General Shavendra Silva was the seventh to hold the post.
Prior to the establishment of the OCDS, the Joint Operations Command (JOC) established in 1985 coordinated among the armed forces.
Army Spokesman Brigadier Rohan Madagoda told the Sunday Times that General Shavendra Silva’s retirement at the end of December. General Shavendra Silva turns 60 this year as he prepares to retire after 40 years of service in the Sri Lanka Army.
He joined the Sri Lanka Army on March 5, 1984.
