Power failures were reported from multiple areas in the country this evening as the 3rd generator of the Lakvijaya coal power plant in Norochcholai.
Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) conducted one hour power cuts in selected areas between 6.30pm to 8.30pm this evening in order to balance the system.
The power cuts were imposed despite the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), the power sector regulator, ruling out any further power cuts even with the breakdown of the 3rd generator at the Norochcholai power plant.
The 3rd generator of the Norochcholai power plant was only reconnected to the national grid yesterday (31) after being out of action for several weeks owing to a technical fault. However, the generator failed yet again within hours of being connected to the national grid.
