The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has detained veteran actress Damita Abeyratne and her spouse for defrauding persons after promising them jobs in South Korea.
Ms Abeyratne and her spouse Mr. Lenley Johnson, who have been accused of defrauding an amount of Rs. 3 million, surrendered to the Fort Magistrate’s Court today afternoon (4).
They were under investigation by the Computer Crime Division (CCD) of the CID.
Accordingly the Fort Magistrate’s Court was notified by the CID that Ms Abeyratne and her spouse are suspects in the case.
In light of this, a writ petition was filed recently seeking to stop their arrest, and was refused.
They were prohibited from traveling overseas by an order issued yesterday (03), by Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage.

The Colombo High Court today (28) sentenced former parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra to three years of Rigorous Imprisonment over charges of the involvement of an abduction.
In his special statement, President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that debt restructuring agreements will postpone all bilateral loan payments to foreign countries until 2028. Additionally, Sri Lanka will have until 2043 to repay these loans on concessional terms.
