The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has taken over the probe into the shooting incident on SLPP MP Uddika Preamaratne’s vehicle in Anuradhapura on Sunday.
Several teams have been deployed for the investigations while CCTV footage on the main roads while the CCTV at the Mps residence had not been operaational at the time of the incident.
An unidentified gunman opened fire at the vehicle of the MP soon after he had returned to his residence in Anuradhapura around 10.30 p.m. on Sunday.
The MP had got off vehicle at the time of the shoorting. However, he escaped unhurt.
Initial investigations revealed that the target had been the person seated in the rear seat. A pistol had been used for the attack.
The STF has been deployed for security around the MP's house.
Meanwhile, several politicians including State Minister Shehan Semasinghe and MP Duminda Dissanayake visited the residence of the MP.
Earlier this month, the MP decided to become an independent member of parliament.
"I entered parliament in 2020 for a system change. I don't see that happening anytime soon. We must end the era of family politics in this country. "Young people like us, from normal families, must provide leadership to this country," he told the house while announcing his decision to become independent.
