The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the drafting of the Local Government Elections (Special Provisions) Bill, which will allow for the recalling of nominations for the 2023 Local Government (LG) Elections.
Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, announced this decision at a press conference today, explaining that during a Cabinet meeting on September 2, 2024, it was agreed that the Legal Draftsman should prepare the bill to cancel the 2023 nominations and facilitate new nominations for the upcoming elections.
The decision was further backed by political party leaders during a meeting on November 25, 2024, where they collectively agreed on the need to recall the previous nominations.
This move aims to ensure the rights of voters and give young candidates the opportunity to submit their nominations.
