The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to allow rice imports without the need for permits to address the ongoing rice shortage.
Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed today that the measure allowing rice imports without permits will remain in effect until December 20, 2024, following an assessment of the current rice shortage, including the scarcity of Nadu rice due to adverse weather conditions affecting local farmers.
Minister Jayatissa emphasized that the retail price of rice is expected to remain stable despite increased imports, with the government's priority being to prevent further rice shortages in the country.
