Cabinet has approved a proposal by Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi to expedite the purchase of test kits and other equipment to carry out PCR tests.
With the discovery of a new variant of COVID-19, demand for PCR tests in Government laboratories has increased to around 20, 000 per day and is showing a trend of rising further, said the Government Information Department, explaining reasons for the decision.
Health authorities last week decided to ramp up PCR testing, with a minimum daily limit of 15, 000 tests per day. This followed the rapid spread in the country of the B.1.1.7 COVID variant, first seen in the UK.
