Approval has been granted to prepare a time frame for an agreement and to commence active discussions with the Japanese diplomatic mission in Colombo with regard to the proposed light railway transit(LRT) project.
The Cabinet of Ministers has given a green light by approving the resolution submitted by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to commence discussions and to decide on the agreement.
This resolution will further strengthen Japan-Sri Lanka bilateral relations that were put at risk when the previous Government headed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa pulled out from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded US$ 1.6 billion LRT project in year 2020.
Before his recent official visit to Japan, President Wickremesinghe got the approval of the Cabinet to re-commence the LRT project.
The 15 km light railway transit project was aimed at reducing Colombo’s growing traffic congestion. The light railway system once set up can travel from Malabe to Colombo within 27 minutes at a speed of 80 km/h.
