Close to 600 inmates have escaped from the Kandakadu drug rehabilitation centre following a clash that erupted last night, police said.
Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said a search operation has commenced with both police and military personnel deployed to search for escapees.
Inmates at the rehabilitation centre had been protesting and accusing authorities of a suspicious death of an inmate.
