A child who was born with disabilities due to the negligence of the medical staff of the Gampaha Hospital was awarded compensation amounting to Rs 30 million by the Colombo district courts today.
Additional District Judge Kalhari Liyanage delivered the order directing the state to pay the compensation after it was revealed that the complaints about excessive pain before the delivery of the child had been ignored and the failure to take note of the complaints and carryout necessary checks had led to deformity.
The Attorney General and the Health Ministry Secretary were cited as respondents in the petion filed by a resident of Biyagama- the mother of the child.
The child was born on May 14, 2012 and as a result of the complications the child is unable to speak or move.
The District Judge took into consideration that on an average Rs 50,000 is spent on a month to meet the medical expenses.
