The cabinet approval was given to streamline and make the role of the 'coroner' more efficient.
In Sri Lanka, coroners are appointed according to the "Korala" system, municipal division system, and hospital system, a note to the Cabinet said.
According to the government, the inability of people to recognize the relevant jurisdictions' boundaries makes it difficult for them to obtain the services of coroners.
Meanwhile, the large number of vacancies in some districts due to the non-appointment of a coroner for a long time is another reason that inconveniences the people.
The Ministry of Justice, Prison Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms has prepared a fixed manual outlining the provisions, including the qualifications, duties, and roles of the coroners, in order to address those concerns and offer a more effective and consistent service to the public.
