The Valachchanai Magistrate's Court today (27) released on bail a suspect held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for 14 months for uploading a photograph of LTTE Supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran to Facebook.
The suspect, G. Wijedasa (30), a father of one, was arrested on November 27, 2020 by the Vaharai Police, who alleged that he had uploaded a photo of the LTTE leader to Facebook the day before to mark the LTTE's "Great Heroes Day" which falls on November 26 each year.
When the case was taken up at the Valachchanai Magistrate's Court today before Magistrate F.M.M. Faeel, the Attorney General did not object to giving bail to the suspect. Accordingly, he was released on a Rs 100, 000 surety bail. The magistrate also ordered the suspect to appear before the Vaharai Police Station on the last Sunday of every month.
Attorneys-at-Law H.M. Hamzeen, Haleef Rifan and T. Jayasingham appeared for the suspect.
