The hearing of the case against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in which he is charged for misusing state funds on an overseas trip has commenced, with a tight security cover in the area.
Heavy security has been deployed around the Colombo Fort Magistrate courts
Police barricades have been placed to prevent people getting closer to the court premises, but a large number of former ministers and MPs have entered the courts.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa also has arrived.
Dr Rukshan Bellana said that Mr Wickremesinghe himself was not in a position to attend the court sittings due to his medical condition.
Dr Bellana said that if the court requires a zoom meeting could be arranged to link Mr Wickremesinghe currently warded at the National Hospital.
Officials of the Attorney General Department have arrived with a security escort.
The court will decide today whether Mr Wickremesinghe would be granted bail or he would be further remanded.
Meanwhile security in several areas in the city too has been increased from morning.
