A passenger attempting to smuggle the largest quantity of gold of 35 kilo grams was arrested by the Customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) today, a senior official said.
The value of the gold was estimated to be over Rs 1,000 million.
Additional Customs Director General Seevali Arukgoda said that the passenger had concealed the gold in nine different items appearing to be motor spare parts and brought it in his baggage.
The suspect is a businessman from Grandpass.
He had arrived from Dubai today morning.
The seized gold consisted of 195 gold biscuits and jewllery items weighing 13 Kilo grams.
Customs Director General Sarath Nonis also visited BIA to inspect the items detected.
