In a major detection at the Ceylon Shipping Lines (CSL) warehouse in Colombo 09, Sri Lanka Customs officers uncovered a large consignment of contraband cigarettes and whisky concealed within a shipment declared as household furniture and personal goods.

The consignment, comprising 26 packages, had arrived from Dubai under two separate Bills of Lading and was consigned to a resident of Thotawaththa, Panadura, identified as M.R.M. Razan.

The concealed cigarettes carried an estimated market value of Rs. 24.18 million, while the whisky was valued at Rs. 180,000. The remainder of the declared personal goods were valued at Rs. 728,000.

Following a formal inquiry conducted by Customs, the inquiring officer ordered the forfeiture of the entire consignment. Including applicable duties, the total value of the seized goods amounted to Rs. 119.2 million rupees.

In addition to the forfeiture, the suspect was imposed with a mitigated penalty of Rs. 500,000.
