Customs officers have seized a variety of cannabis known as "Kush" hidden inside the false bottoms of two crates imported from Canada.
A total of 12 kilograms of the drugs were found hidden inside the crates, Customs Media Spokesman, Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Legal) Sudaththa Silva said. The street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be Rs. 84 million.
The crates had been sent by an individual in Canada to an address in Jaffna.
Customs officers who had grown suspicious about the crates opened them in front of the wharf clerk who had come to claim them. It was during this inspection that officers found the drugs hidden inside false bottoms of the crates.
