There has been an increase in messages being shared on social media where hackers try to steal people's personal data by tricking them into thinking they have won gifts online, the Information Technology Society of Sri Lanka (ITSSL) states.
ITSSL warns that these messages, which are designed to appear as being from reputed companies, attempt to trick unsuspecting users into clicking them by deceiving them into thinking they have won a prize.
Clicking on such messages could enable hackers to steal sensitive personal information of users and could also enable them to take over the social media accounts of users, the ITSSL warns. Moreover, clicking on such messages from a mobile phone may lead to users downloading malware into their phones without their knowledge, it adds.
As such, the society urges the public to be mindful of such fake messages and not to click them if they come across them.
