All passengers of a bus swept away by rising floodwaters on the Kalawewa Bridge along the Anuradhapura–Puttalam road have been rescued, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda said.
The group of nearly 70 had scrambled onto the roof of a nearby building as water levels surged, minutes before the empty bus was washed away by the current.
Navy rescue teams reached the stranded passengers and brought them to safety despite challenging conditions.
The Sri Lanka Air Force is now making arrangements to airlift the group as floodwaters continue to rise in the surrounding area.
