A Police Constable was killed in an accident caused by driver under the influence of liquor at a check point in Ambalantota, after the Policeman tried to stop the speeding vehicle in the early hours of today.
The constable, M. Sarath Kumara, was due to take part in a farewell ceremony later in the day, to mark his transfer which was to be effective from January 3.
Around 2.30 a.m. the constable deployed for duty close to the Walawe bridge in Ambalantota had noticed a speeding vehicle and tried to stop it. However, the driver ignoring the sigals had driven towards the policeman and knocked him down before escaping from the location.
The car was later located in Ridiyagama and a 23 year old driver was arrested.
The police constable is a resident of Suriyawewa and father of two children.
