Dr. Sumitra Peiris’ funeral to be held with state honours

The Government has decided to hold the funeral of renowned filmmaker Dr. Sumitra Peiris with state honours today at the Independence Square premises at 4.00 pm.

Earlier, the remains were placed at her sister’s residence in Gower Street, Colombo 05. The decision was made by the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local government.

Born on 24 March 1934, the beloved wife of the legendary “Father of Sri Lankan Cinema” late Dr. Lester James Peiris was 88 years old at the time of her demise. Putting forward outstanding contributions towards the advancement of Sri Lankan cinema working alongside her husband, her life and legacy will always be kept alive.

Dr. Sumitra Peiris kicked off her own cinema director debut with her first film, “Gehenu Lamai” which was a box office hit and she was rewarded with many awards. She carried on with directing her next film “Ganga Addara” which is another box office hit and has accordingly directed many more award-winning feature films including, “Yahalu Yeheli”, “Maya”, “Sakman Maluwa”, “Vaishnavee” which have been thrown into international praise.

    Rest in Peace, Madam Peiris. Her death is a great loss to the Sinhala cinema.
