Driver involved in the Kanatta junction accident arrested

(UPDATED) -The driver of the crane involved in the accident at Kanatta junction, Borella today morning that claimed the life of one person and injured seven others has been arrested, Police said.

The crane had crashed into several vehicles and motor cycles.

Police said they believe that the brakes of the vehicle had malfunctioned leading to the accident.

A three-wheel driver who witnessed the accident said the vehicles had stopped for the traffic lights when the crane lost control and crashed into the vehicles.

He said some of the bikes were found under the crane.

The person killed in the accident was a 62 year old  from Athurugiriya.

    Heavy vehicles over a certain weight & size limit should not be allowed into high traffic zones during peak periods in the city due to 1. The risks involved.2. Impediments to other smaller vehicles 3. Damage to ' carpeted ' road surfaces for which alternate routes might be used to mitigate such damage.
