Discussions are underway to finalize the gazette notification calling nominations for the Local Government (LG) polls ahead of sending it to the Government Printers Department tomorrow, sources from Election Commission said.
According to EC sources, nominations will be accepted at District level on January 19.
Earlier Chairman of Election Commission S.G. Punchihewa said local government elections for 340 bodies will be held before March 15. Accordingly, District Secretaries will be acting as District Returning Officers (DROs) as well.
Meanwhile a petition has been filed by Army Colonel (Retired), W.M.R.Wijesundara before the Supreme Court, seeking a writ order to be issued to the Elections Commission, suspending the conducting of local government elections.
