Eight individuals were taken into custody in four separate incidents in Batticaloa under Prevention of Terrosim Act (PTA) over organizing Nov -27 Commemorative events to remember the war dead on Monday.
Police said that arrested individuals were charged under notorious PTA for violating Court directives and engaged in activities to remember Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a terrorist outfit banned in the country.
On Nov 25, Deputy Leader of Democratic Cadres Party N. Sangarapillai was arrested and remanded for two weeks after being produced before Kaluwanchikudy Magistrate Courts. He was arrested at an event organized by the party to honour the parents of the fallen cadres.
Meanwhile, a father and son were among the arrested persons when they tried to commemorate their loved ones near Batticaloa police station. Police seized red- yellow flags, banners and other decoration materials from the van as well. Both of them remanded till December 13.
In another separate event, four youths were arrested at Tharavai Martyrs Cemetery in Batticaloa on Monday under charges of violating Court orders secured by police on organizing commemorating event in the district. (By Theva Athiran)
