A 10-year-old elephant has been shot dead in the Gemunupura area of Thanamalwila while the carcass of another elephant has been found, Police said today.
The carcass of the elephant was found on Sunday in the area used for cultivation.
A resident in the area has been arrested on suspicion of his involvement in killing the elephant.
A post-mortem is due to be held regarding the death.
Another carcass of an elephant also has been found in the same district.
