Eleven Indian fishermen who were detained for engaging in illegal bottom trawling in Sri Lankan territorial waters were released today on a humanitarian basis today following a recommendation from the Attorney General department.
The AG's recommendation was conveyed to Delft Magistrate Court today and detained fishermen were released. The released fishermen will be repatriated to their hometown of Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu.
The release came in the wake of a scheduled visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modis who will be arriving in Colombo later today. (4)
