The low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal to the southeast of Sri Lanka has intensified into a depression and would enhance showery conditions over the island in the next few days, the Meteorology Department said.

According to them the depression which is centered about 700 km southeast of Pottuvil is expected to move west- northwestwards during the next 24 hours.

Therefore the showery condition over the island, particularly in Northern, North Central, eastern, Uva and central provinces is expected to enhance from tomorrow.

According to the warning issued by the Meteorology Department North, North central, eastern, western, Uva, North western  and central provinces are expected to experience strong wind tomorrow, January, 08,2026.

However the winds would intensify into very strong winds on Friday, January, 09, 2026 in Northern, eastern and central provinces. While very strong and strong winds are respectively expected on Saturday, January 10, in Northern, North Central provinces.

They forecasted that heavy rains are expected for the next three days, where showers or thunder showers above 75 mm to 150mm are expected in several districts.

 The met department warned Naval and fishing communities not to venture to the deep and shallow sea areas extending from Kankesanturai to Hambantota via Trincomalee and Pottuvil from 07 January until further notice. Those who are engaged in the other sea should be vigilant.  

They also requested Navel and fishing communities to be attentive to the forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
