The Government said today that estate workers will receive a daily minimum wage of Rs 1000 from April.
Minister of Plantations Dr Ramesh Pathirana announced the move in Parliament today in reply to a question raised by MP Varuna Liyanage. Minister Pathirana noted that though several parties had gone to court against the decision to increase the daily wage of estate workers to Rs 1000, the court decision handed down yesterday has now paved the way for the daily wage to be increased to Rs 1000.
He described te court decision on the minimum wage of estate workers as a great victory.
Estate workers have long campaigned for their daily wage to be increased to Rs 1000, and the move comes after many protests and several island-wide strikes launched by estate sector unions.
