Addressing Parliament today (10), President Ranil Wickremesinghe invited all Tamil political parties to a meeting scheduled for next week to discuss issues facing the Tamils and resolve these issues amicably without outside interference prior to the 75th Independence Day celebrations next year.
He further said that a report had been called on renewable energy potential for the Northern Province and the possibility of green hydrogen which will boost the Northern economy.
Last week, the Sunday Times Political column reported that President Wickremesinghe has embarked on the preliminaries for a multi-pronged programme of ethnic reconciliation. The first initiative in this direction is appointing a ministerial team to put together the broad outlines of what such a project should encompass. That will later form the basis of discussions with all stakeholders.
The separate unit set up at Presidential Secretariat is to explore possibilities of setting up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission based on the South African model and a solution to three decades-long ethnic conflict on the basis of devolving powers to Provincial Councils.
