Former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) SSP Shani Abeysekara, has been granted bail by the Court of Appeal today along with Police Sub-Inspector Sugath Mohan Mendis under strict bail conditions.
The bench consist of Justices Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and R. Gurusinghe granted bail to both who have been in remand custody for nearly a year.
They were released on a cash bail of Rs 25,000 and two personal bonds worth Rs 1 million each. The court also imposed a foreign travel ban on both of them.
The former CID Chief was remanded for allegedly fabricating evidence in the case against former Deputy Inspector General Vass Gunawardena.
Former DIG Vass Gunawardena, his son and four other suspects were found guilty of the abduction and killing of businessman Mohamed Shiyam and sentenced to death by a trial-at-bar at the Colombo High Court in 2015.
