Fairly heavy rain forecast today

The Department of Meteorology noted that Eastern and Uva Provinces along with Hambantota District will see occasional showers or thundershowers today (28).

Northern and North-central Provinces will witness a few showers.

Besides, showers or thundershowers are due in the remaining provinces of the island after 1:00 pm, a Duty Meteorologist of the Met. Department said.

Moderately heavy rainfall over 75mm is possible in certain areas in Central, Uva and Sabaragamuwa Provinces as well as Galle and Matara Districts.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure region has developed over South Andaman Sea and the neighboring Southeast Bay of Bengal Sea area. It is expected to track West-northwestwards and develop into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around November 29.

Hence, naval and fishing communities were sent word not to venture into deep and shallow sea areas and were further requested to be on alert on future forecasts sent out by the Met. Department.

Showers or thundershowers are on the cards at multiple places in the marine regions off shores extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Pottuvil, Hambantota and Galle.

Winds will strike North-easterly at 30-40 KMPH in the sea zones off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Kankesanthurai and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara. Winds will be at 20-30 KMPH in the rest of the sea regions surrounding the island.

Offshore waters extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Kankesanthurai and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara are expected to tone down.

Strong gusts of wind and turbulent waters are foreseen during thunderstorms transiently.
