Mannar is known as the "Rice Bowl of the North." Yet, farmers in the district expect their harvest to fall by as much as 50% this season owing to the government's failure to provide fertiliser in time for the cultivation season.
Farmers in the district are now in the process of harvesting their crops, but note that many fields have not been cultivated this season owing to lack of fertiliser, while the lack of pesticides has resulted in their crops being attacked by pests, who have destroyed much of the crop.
District farmer associations expect the harvest to fall by at least 50% and said farmers have been put in a severe predicament owing to this situation.
