A request to release funds has been made to the Finance Ministry to immediately purchase essential medicines, including life-saving drugs, said Prof Channa Jayasumana, State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals.
He said the request was made in order to prevent a severe drug shortage in the coming weeks.
"Due to the dollar crisis, it has been extremely difficult to open Line of Credit (LC)s to bring down essential medicines, especially drugs used for cancer treatment from India and China. We met the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and expressed our concern as there is a life-saving drug shortage already,” he said.
