Fines for visa overstaying foreigners revised

News

A penalty of US dollars 250 will be imposed on foreigners overstaying in the country from seven to 14 days.  Those who overstay for over 14 days will be fined US dollars 500, apart from visa fees.

However, a person who departs from Sri Lanka within 07 days calculated from the date of expiry of the period of validity of the original visa will not need to pay a penalty. They will be only required to pay the applicable visa fee at the port of departure.

Previously, foreigners staying in the country without a valid visa were charged US dollars 500 penalty in addition to their visa fee.

A gazette extraordinary was issued on Wednesday revising penalities imposed on visa overstay of foreigners. The gazette was issued by Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles under the Immigrants and Emigrants Act.
