A major fire broke out this morning at the Karadiyana Waste Yard, burning through plastic and non-biodegradable waste.
Thick smoke rose from the site, raising environmental concerns. Firefighters from the Moratuwa Municipal Council deployed three water bowsers, two fire trucks, and 18 personnel to contain the blaze.
Moratuwa Fire Brigade Officer Dulsiri Kumara said the cause of the fire remains unknown but confirmed it is under control.
Western Province Waste Management Authority Director Nalin Mannapperuma said he was unaware of the incident, citing his attendance at a meeting, and referred further queries to the Authority’s Chairman.
