The prices of fish in the north have risen steeply in the past few days due to several issues including the prevailing fuel shortage.
Fishing in Mannar, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Jaffna district have been severely hampered due to the fuel shortage, forcing fishermen to stay home. This in turn has driven the prices of fish up steeply.
Meanwhile, the recent fuel price increase has also caused severe hardship to the fishermen, which has also contributed to the price increase of fish.
Due to these reasons, fish that earlier sold for between Rs. 700 to Rs. 1000 a kilo is now selling at Rs 2000 a kilo. The price of prawns and crab too have gone up, a with a kilo now fetching anything between Rs. 1600 to Rs. 1800.
