Fishing gear of the Sri Lankan fishermen had been destroyed by Indian Fishermen, Jaffna fishermen claimed.
They explained that the Indian fishermen had entered Vettilakkeni sea shore and damaged their fishing gear worth over Rs 3 million and fled.
The fishing nets and gear belonging to fishermen who operate in four fishing boats have been destroyed. They explained that around 100 Indian fishermen arrived in 20 larger Indian trawlers and intimidated the local fishermen and destroyed their nets.
The Jaffna fishermen’s Association said that the fishermen are facing difficulty engaging in fishing activities due to the incident and therefore the government should at least provide some compensation money or fishing gear.
